Proportional Thumbs show how much of a document is displayed in a window. If half of a document is currently displayed in a window, the scrollbar thumb is sized to be half the length of the scrollbar. This gives you an idea of how large the document is, without having to scroll the window to find out. Click for a ∞DApicture∞ showing how it works.
Live Scrolling scrolls the contents of the window while you drag the scroll thumb. Just release the thumb when you see the part of the document you want: no more guessing where you'll end up!
Mac OS 8.5 has adopted Smart Scrolling in the Finder, but only Smart Scroll provides these enhancements for "the rest of apps" today, without updating applications: Netscape, Emailer, Eudora, ClarisWorks, Word, etc.
To disable Proportional Thumbs or Live Scrolling for selected applications, ΓÇÿAddΓÇÖ the applications to the Exclusions List.
